Morgan Burger is a third-generation jewelry retailer, investigative journalist, and the founder of FOR SEAS, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing transparency to marine mining practices within the jewelry industry. Her interdisciplinary background and passion for the ocean led her to a role as a graduate researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she studied the historical, environmental and political facets of marine diamond mining. Her research culminated in a short documentary chronicling her journey to Greenland, where she investigated offshore diamond mining exploration and shed light on the potential implications for local communities and their livelihoods.

CLARITY: A CALL FOR TRANSPARENCY IN MARINE DIAMOND MINING

While the world debates the merits and pitfalls of deep seabed mining in international waters, there's another seafloor extractive industry quietly thriving beneath the waves. Marine diamond mining (MDM)—it's been Namibia's diamond jackpot for over 60 years, thanks then to De Beers Marine (DBM), now operating as Debmarine Namibia (DBMN), a partnership between the Government of the Republic of Namibia and the De Beers Group. Their seven high-tech mining vessels work around the clock, exploiting millions of carats of Namibia’s highest-quality diamonds annually—all from the seafloor and all without ever touching human hands.

Environmental studies commissioned by DBMN argue that the socio-economic gain for the country greatly outweighs the negative environmental impacts, greenlighting the license renewal process year after year. In investigating these dynamics, a surprising news report was unearthed. In 2021, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) conducted surveys near Maniitsoq, Greenland, on behalf of DBM in pursuit of seafloor diamonds. To this day, the local community remains in the dark about the potential mining project looming over their delicate Arctic fjord environment.

CLARITY aims to illuminate the critical realities of MDM, juxtaposing Namibia's orange sandy dunes with Greenland's icy white expanse. Two vastly different locales facing the same diamond giant. Will Greenland decide to take a leap for economic self sufficiency or choose to prioritize the natural environment their people depend on?
